Over ¥66 billion smuggled goods seized by Guangdong police

A special campaign was launched this year focusing on smuggling cases involving finished oil products、frozen food、 illicit inbound waste、endangered wildlife cigarettes and more. On November 5th, Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau and anti-smuggling bureau of Guangzhou Customs held joint exercises in 7 provinces across China. The major crackdown dealt a heavy blow to criminals involved with frozen food smuggling. As a result, this action captured 78 criminal suspects and froze the involved capital of over 17million yuan. The criminal gang had smuggled more than 50 thousand tons of illicit frozen food since January, 2018.

Zhou Huashan stressed?the?importance?of cracking frozen food smuggling. “At present, many countries all over the world are still seriously affected by?COVID-19. If smuggled frozen products are produced and transported through epidemic area, there is a high risk of epidemic spread without food inspection and quarantine. People should resist smuggling frozen food and never buy frozen meat from unknown origins.” said Zhou. The authority also encourages people to report smuggling cases. In accordance with measures for reporting crimes involving finished oil smuggling, there are currently 6 whistle-blowers getting a total reward of 270 thousand yuan.

In addition, Guangdong Customs launched two rounds of “Blue Sky 2020” anti-smuggling campaigns to prevent illicit foreign waste from entry into the country. 133 cases involving illicit inbound waste were solved and over 1 million tons of illicit inbound waste like metals and slag were seized from January to November this year. Moreover, Guangdong Customs have taken over 100 kilograms of narcotics.

With convenient transportation and well-developed logistics, Guangdong is a major province of foreign trade, it is also the main battlefield against smuggling. Driven by the Covid-19 epidemic and domestic market demand. The price difference between domestic and foreign key items has further widened. Smuggling activities have continued to be active, especially in the Pearl River Estuary and its surrounding waters. As the southwest border was temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, a large number of smuggled goods were transferred to sea transportation. Since the beginning of this year, anti-smuggling law enforcement across Guangdong have seized about 43,000 tons of smuggled frozen products, a year-on-year increase of 91.5%.
